Oreo is only available as an OTA for Pixel and Nexus phones as well as Verizon's Pixel and Pixel XL devices, so the number of users affected by the bug should be limited. |
Basically, Mobiles can connect to the Internet in two methods. Via a local access point or WiFi connection or by connecting to the mobile carrier's network "mobile data connection". The Android OS will prefer the WiFi connection over mobile data to avoid incurring extra costs on the user's mobile strategy.
The bug has been discovered after many users who recently updated to the latest Android version had the unpleasant shock of finding out huge spike in data usage.
According to a user from Reddit:
"After updating to Oreo last night, I received a huge spike in data usage, all the while being connected to Wi-Fi. I contacted support and was told that they are aware of the issue and are working on a fix. In the meantime I have turned off mobile data while at home, so only Wi-Fi is being used"
According to one user, Google for some reason enabled the setting by default during the Oreo developer preview, but didn't change it back before general release. Fortunately, very few Android users will be affected, given Oreo is currently only available as an OTA for Pixel and Nexus phones as well as Verizon's Pixel and Pixel XL devices.
Android Oreo Users are recommended to use Developer Options and disable Mobile Data to make sure that the mobile isn't using mobile data needlessly. ๐
